We travelled through the Extremadura on the back of Buddy Levy’s stunning acount of De Orellana’s ‘Voyage of Death and Discovery Down the Amazon’ and Pizarro’s last stand at Jacquijahuana, up in the Andes.
One of our stops was in Trujillo, where we stayed in De Orellana’s birthhouse. When one is swept away by the tales of courage and brutality of the Spanish Conquistadores, there is almost no better place to stay. There is by the way no better book that I can recommend.
